Cattle Drive - the life of a cattle dog

Seb's smile vanished before he had time to answer the fox, he stood immediately. "I will talk to you later" he said to Feather quickly before walking towards Jane, ears back, tail down. "Yes Jane" he said quietly.

"Walk with me," she said lightly, giving him a smile. She began to pad along the treeline, towards the sheep. "Seb...what were you discussing with Fell?"

Seb walked by Jane, watching his paws. He sighed and looked at her, "I wanted to make a deal with him" he said quietly, avoiding her eye.

Jane cocked her head, hazel eyes wide with confusion.
"Well, that's smart. I also wished to talk with him, though i hadn't quite come to that stage yet. what did he say?"

Seb was slightly surprised at Jane's reaction, "umm...we were interrupted" he said in a matter-of-fact kind of way.

Jane rolled her eyes.
"Yes, but what did he say before that?"

Sebastian suddenly felt quite flushed, "he asked something I had to refuse" he muttered, head low as he walked.

"Well get on with it, can't be that bad anyhow. Not like he asked for a dog or something." she chuckled, trying to darken the mood. Neither of them noticed a shadow following from the trees.
'Yes, that's right, tell her slowly and break the impact,' thought Fell, hopping along, ears probing their conversation, 'there are two ways for jane to go. Either she'll refuse and there's no deal, or she'll do it for the better of the pack and I get a mate to hunt with!'

Sebastian stopped and met Jane's eyes, a serious expression on his face as his brow cresed slightly with worry and concentration. "He..he asked for you" he said, hesitantly, dark brown eyes never leaving the other's hazel orbs.

Jane was silent, and then she blinked. And then the collie did somethin completely unexpected. she laughed. Not just a giggle, but a full belly laugh, and she actually fell over, uncontrollably chuckling.
"He....what....asked....me...." she managed to gasp out.

Sebastian did not share in Jane's mirth and watched her, slightly irritated, this was very important to him, more important than the collie knew. "It's not funny..." he said quietly, looking away as a frown rapidly set on his brow.

SOH lay down in a sour mood.

Jane stood up, shaking off the dust, and frowned lightly.
"Oh, come ON, Seb, I'd rather eat my own tail than go with..that FOX." She half-smiled, looking hopefully at him.

Sebastian didn't smile. "He said if you wouldn't be his mate, that he would kill as many of the livestock that he could, which is a lot Jane" he said, still slightly stung by what Fell had said about his feelings for Jane.

"Well then we'll just have to get to him first, won't we." replied Jane harshly, her hazel eyes drawn and her chest up to full height. "I'm not scared of no fox!"

Sebastian smiled and licked Jane's cheek, "thats the spirit" he said. The shepherd then heard a noice from above, he looked up and spotted something in the trees, "FELL!" he shouted as he recognised the fox.

SOH heard fells name and immediatley bolted toward Seb's voice. "where is he?" she said, a snarl curled on her tight aussie lips.

ButterCup came up behind SOH, "He probably is lookin for Feather."

Seb looked at SOH, "I...I thought I saw him but I guess I was imagining things, you'd better go back to the farm" he said, smiling sweetly.

SOH gave him a scowling, unamused face. she didnt move.

Fell appeared in a high tree branch.
"As if I'm scared of you, SOH. Whatcha gonna do, mutt, huh?"

Sebastian lost his patience, "GO NOW!" he roared at SOH, baring his teeth in a fierce snarl, the big dog raised his head in dominance.

"Silence." came Jane's deadly serious voice as she growled low in her throat, ears thrown back and bushy tail higher than Seb's though she was shorter. She stood, the epitome of alpha, and she padded slowly and evenly between SOH and Seb, facing Fell.
"What is it that you want, you flea-bitten excuse for a canine?" He gave her a devilish grin.
"What else? A full stomach, a little revenge, and oh, of course, a lovely mate. You interested?"
"Never," she spat back at him, hazel eyes narrowed.
"Such a shame..." He studied her as though she was a particulary succulent leg of lamb.
